Piranchi Version 2

I'm re-visiting that universe I made up a year or so ago, and I'm giving things a more sci-fi turn.

Piranchi (singular "piranchi"):

Biology - Piranchi are amphibious and can breathe both in and out of water. On land they walk on two legs, and in the water they swim using their two front flippers and broad tail. Their smooth skin is not waterproof, and they can suffer from dehydration if exposed to dry and/or hot environments. Their eyes are very large and set on the sides of their head, which gives them the ability to see in nearly all directions. Their pupils can expand or contract to see in a wide variety of lighting conditions. Piranchi are not especially fast swimmers and are very awkward on land, but they are able to avoid predators by moving between the two environments. The species can communicate over long distances via infrasound. Rather than using their claws (which are not very dexterous), they manipulate objects with their tongues.

Culture - Piranchi do not value family members or mates more than other members of their species. They give have many offspring at once, so individual lives are not as valued as in creatures that care for a small number of young. Group survival, however, is extremely important, and unintentionally causing the death of another is considered as bad as murder (after all, the killer has proven themselves to be a threat to society). Piranchi names consist of the individual's name and the home name. For example, someone born in Tal Mardei might be named "Rito Chimardei" ("chi" means "person"). Their name is self-chosen, and means "people of Piran".

History - The piranchi discovered the lakua living on their own moon and adopted them into their society, exchanging the benefits of technology for brute strength. They later developed the technology to travel to distant locations across the galaxy, and used their superior technology to rule over other species. This changed when they discovered the korfans, who rivaled them in technological power. This prompted them to be more careful about opening holes to avoid the risk of running into a powerful enemy. The piranchi later discovered the planet Yauren and began their conquest of it. By freeing the humans enslaved by the native almar, they were able to build enough support to win the war and claim the world as their own. They are strongly considering invading cyrid territory.
